biala ringwood respite programme

Brief History of Biala

Biala Ringwood commenced as an Outreach Program of Ringwood Uniting Church during 1981, following a study of the Biala program operating in Box Hill and research into the needs of Ringwood and district. It began operating for one day per week in May 1981 increasing to two days in 1982 and finally three days per week in July 1984 catering for thirty children with a wide range of additional needs.

Biala is reliant on community volunteers who are the mainstay of the program together with a qualified employed co-ordinator. Training and support are given to volunteers to enable a happy time with appropriate activities suitable to the child’s abilities conducted in a safe manner. Knowing their child is well cared for gives parents respite from the demanding care they provide.

A committee of management including volunteer and parent representation is responsible for the oversight of the program ensuring all regulations are complied with and operates on a sound financial basis.
